Panaji. The return of the Luthra brothers to Goa, accused in the horrific fire incident at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa, came into the limelight on Wednesday when the health of one of the accused deteriorated after landing at the airport. After complaining of chest pain and nervousness, the police had to take both the brothers directly to the hospital.
Nightclub co-owners Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra were brought to Goa from Delhi amid tight police security. Both were to be produced in the local court, but due to a medical emergency, the process was postponed. During a primary checkup at the hospital, a brother complained of discomfort and chest pain, after which he was kept under the observation of doctors.
This incident came to light when about 11 days had passed since the fire incident. 25 people died in this accident that took place on December 6, after which there was anger across the country. The Luthra brothers had left the country for Thailand a few hours after the fire, which had increased the problems for the investigating agencies.
According to the police, both the accused reached Delhi from Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, where they were detained by a Goa Police team at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. After this, a Delhi court gave 48 hours transit remand to the Goa Police so that the accused could be brought to Goa for investigation. Investigation has revealed that the Indian passports of both of them were suspended after the fire incident. After this, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued them emergency certificates, which are one-way travel documents. Through these, both of them were deported to India.
Goa Police says that further legal action will depend on the medical reports of the accused. At the same time, the investigation into the aspects like ignoring safety standards, illegal structure, and negligence behind the fire in the nightclub is going on. The police are also investigating how serious the role of the people responsible for the accident was and whether it constitutes a case of criminal negligence. Officials say that as soon as the medical condition becomes normal, both the accused will be produced in the court, and further investigation will be done in the case.
